Absence of LIV Golf Players Does Not Diminish Team Europe’s Ryder Cup Chances, Says Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy has secured qualification for team Europe in the upcoming Ryder Cup in Rome. The team aims to bounce back from their previous defeat and reclaim the trophy.

However, some of Europe’s top players, including Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Sergio Garcia, are ineligible to participate in the event due to their withdrawal from the DP World Tour (European Tour).

On the other hand, United States team captain Zach Johnson has expressed that LIV players would technically be available for his team in the Ryder Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place from September 29 to October 1.

When asked about the absence of LIV players in team Europe, McIlroy stated, “No, I don’t think it would make a difference for us.” He made this statement prior to the PGA Tour’s season-ending championship in Atlanta, as reported by the BBC.

In the previous Ryder Cup, Europe suffered a record 19-9 defeat at the hands of the United States in 2021. McIlroy has previously expressed his viewpoint that LIV players should not be part of the European team.

The Northern Irishman has been a strong advocate against LIV Golf in the PGA Tour. However, since the tour’s deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), he has been able to take a step back and focus more on his own game.

Reflecting on his change in approach, McIlroy said, “I think last year, I was probably energized by everything that was going on in the world of golf. I felt like we were maybe in a bit more of a state of flux.” He noted that in the past, he was heavily involved in discussions and decision-making processes related to improving the PGA Tour.

However, he now feels less emotionally invested in such matters and is able to focus more on his own performance. McIlroy shared that he even took two days off to spend time with his family before the championship in Atlanta.
