Abby Phillip shares her perspective on the enduring political legacy of Jesse Jackson

Last Saturday, a gathering took place at the former synagogue that now serves as the headquarters for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Chicago. Dozens of former aides, friends, supporters, and dignitaries came together to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Rev. Jesse Jackson’s second presidential campaign. It was a bittersweet occasion as the founder of the organization, once a towering college football star, is now confined to a wheelchair due to the effects of Parkinson’s disease. Despite his physical challenges, Mr. Jackson’s mind remains sharp, according to those close to him.

Fifty-two years ago, at the age of 30, Mr. Jackson split from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to establish his own organization called Operation PUSH. The organization, which initially aimed to “Save Humanity,” later merged with the Rainbow Coalition and shifted its focus to “Serve Humanity.” Now, at 81 years old, Mr. Jackson has decided to hand over day-to-day leadership of the organization to Reverend Dr. Frederick Haynes III.

Mr. Jackson’s significance lies not only in his years of dedication to civil rights but also in the enduring struggle for full equality for Black people in America. His work is often misunderstood, and his complex nature adds an element of intrigue to his legacy. From his time marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, to his prominent role after Dr. King’s assassination, Mr. Jackson became a well-known figure in America and beyond.

In Chicago, Mr. Jackson managed Operation Breadbasket, an initiative aimed at addressing the economic disparities faced by Black people. Borrowing tactics pioneered by Dr. King himself, Mr. Jackson and his wife, Coretta, drew attention to the poor living conditions faced by Black people through a daring housing project experiment. Their actions led to improvements in housing conditions and greater opportunities for Black people in Chicago.

As the years passed, Operation Breadbasket evolved, taking on national corporations and pushing for diversity in boardrooms and executive positions. Mr. Jackson’s influence was so powerful that a mere meeting with him could spark significant changes within corporate entities. His tireless advocacy for diversity and opportunities for women and people of color coincided with his political ambitions.

Mr. Jackson’s efforts to register voters across the country played a crucial role in Harold Washington becoming Chicago’s first Black mayor in 1983. This success fueled his own presidential campaigns, where he sought to mobilize voters not solely on the basis of race but on moral imperatives and policy proposals. His platform, focused on economic inequality, universal health care, and America first policies, foreshadowed the priorities of today’s Democratic Party.

The significance of Mr. Jackson’s presidential candidacies cannot be understated. While he may be remembered as the most serious Black candidate for the presidency until Barack Obama’s historic campaign, his greatest achievement lies in the policy platform he built. His vision of a diverse coalition working together for social and economic justice paved the way for future progress.

Indeed, Mr. Jackson’s impact on the Democratic Party was instrumental. His campaigns led to permanent changes in the party’s nominating process, including the elimination of the winner-take-all primary system. These changes made it possible for Barack Obama to secure his first victory in the Democratic primary and gave hope to an entire generation of Black Americans.

As we reflect on Mr. Jackson’s legacy, it is essential to recognize the doors of opportunity he opened for marginalized communities. In a time when diversity is under attack, his work remains as relevant as ever. Let us not forget the lessons we can learn from his dedication to social justice and his unwavering belief in the power of unity.
