Aaron Boone questioned about Luke Voit following Anthony Rizzo’s placement on the injured list

Introducing the new first baseman, but is he really new? The Yankees found themselves in an interesting situation when Anthony Rizzo was placed on the injured list due to concussion symptoms, and at the same time, the Mets released Luke Voit. Could there be a potential swap between the two teams? NJ.com reached out to Yankees manager Aaron Boone to get his thoughts on the matter after their recent victory against the Houston Astros.

Boone responded with a smile on his face, causing the media surrounding him to chuckle. However, he quickly clarified that his demeanor should not be interpreted as a hint at anything. When asked again about the possibility of signing Voit, Boone tried to put the subject to rest by stating that he was aware of Voit’s decision to opt out, but that was essentially all he knew.

Luke Voit is no stranger to the Yankees, as they acquired him in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals back in 2018. He quickly became a fan favorite due to his impressive power at the plate, hitting 14 home runs in his first 39 games with the team and going on to hit 21 homers in 2019. He even led the majors with 22 home runs during the shortened 2020 season.

However, with the Yankees acquiring Anthony Rizzo before the 2021 deadline, Voit’s role became less essential and he was eventually traded to the San Diego Padres before ending up with the Washington Nationals in the Juan Soto deal. This season, Voit started with the Milwaukee Brewers but was released in June. He then signed a minor-league deal with the Mets, hoping to earn a call-up from the organization. However, it seems he has now been granted his release in order to explore opportunities with other teams, according to The Post’s Mike Puma.
