A Riveting Account: Schumer and Romney Seek Safety in Tel Aviv Amidst Hamas Rocket Assault on Israel

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D), Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and other U.S. lawmakers found themselves seeking shelter in Tel Aviv during a missile attack launched by Hamas. According to Schumer, this incident highlights the importance of the U.S. continuing to support Israel.

During their visit to Israel, Schumer and Romney were part of a bipartisan congressional delegation that met with senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They were working towards a support package amidst the ongoing conflict.

Reflecting on the experience, Schumer emphasized the challenges faced by Israelis on a daily basis.

“We must provide Israel with the necessary support to defend itself,” Schumer stated in a tweet.

In a press conference following the incident, Schumer revealed that the delegation, which included Senators Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), and Bill Cassidy (R-La.), was having lunch when the sirens went off. They were immediately taken to a shelter and remained there until it was safe.

During their trip, the delegation also met with families of victims and hostages, leaving a profound impact on Schumer.

The current conflict began with a surprise attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, involving the storming of Israeli border towns and communities, shootings at a music festival, and the kidnapping of hundreds of people.

In response, Israel launched a relentless bombardment of Gaza and temporarily cut off essential supplies, including water. There are reports of Israel preparing for a ground offensive.

Gaza’s hospitals are on the brink of collapse, with dwindling supplies of essential items, raising concerns among medical professionals.

The death toll continues to rise, with over 4,150 casualties on both sides and numerous injuries.

President Joe Biden has cautioned against Israel reoccupying Gaza, stating it would be a “big mistake.”

Meanwhile, Biden is reportedly considering a visit to Israel as a demonstration of the U.S.’s commitment to standing with Israel during the ongoing conflict.
