Embracing the challenge of matching its predecessor’s success, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” presents a razor-sharp formula that pays homage to Agatha Christie. Writer-director Rian Johnson skillfully utilizes language, making every word count and lending the sequel its distinctive edge.
Netflix has taken advantage of the opportunity to acquire the “Knives Out” franchise. Departing from its usual theatrical distribution strategy, Netflix plans to release the movie widely for one week before making it available on their streaming service in late December. While most viewers will likely choose to watch it at home, “Glass Onion” is well-suited for an appreciative audience seeking an engaging experience.
Transitioning from the family dynamics of “Knives Out,” which provided a compelling motive for killing off the patriarch, Johnson explores a different setting in “Glass Onion.” The story revolves around eccentric billionaire Miles Bron (played by Edward Norton) inviting his old group of friends to a murder-mystery getaway on his secluded Greek isle, during the time of Covid, no less. The guests will be tasked with solving his own supposed “murder.”
However, the game takes an unexpected turn as master detective Benoit Blanc (portrayed by Daniel Craig) receives his invitation. Blanc remains brilliant and peculiar in equal measure, contributing to the intriguing nature of the story.
The roster of guests and potential killers (or victims) includes a fashion designer/social-media personality (Kate Hudson) and her partner (Jessica Henwick), a fitness influencer (Dave Bautista) and his girlfriend/sidekick (Madelyn Cline), a scientist (Leslie Odom Jr.), a politician (Kathryn Hahn), and Miles’ estranged former business partner (Janelle Monáe). Each character adds complexity and intrigue to the murder-mystery narrative.
While “Glass Onion” may lack the sense of discovery that accompanied the original film, Johnson acknowledges the need to refresh the formula without reinvention by changing the setting. This alteration revitalizes the storyline, offering audiences a fresh take on the beloved genre.
Furthermore, Daniel Craig embraces his new signature role, bringing a different energy to his portrayal of Benoit Blanc. Craig’s performance showcases a more cerebral form of crimefighting, reminiscent of Hercule Poirot, complete with a Southern twang that adds to the character’s eccentricity.
Netflix reportedly invested a significant amount to acquire the sequels, potentially creating unrealistic expectations for future installments. However, “Glass Onion” successfully explores new layers and demonstrates the potential for future “Knives Out Mysteries.” Regardless of how or where one chooses to watch it, the film promises a compelling experience.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” premieres in US theaters on November 23 and will be available on Netflix starting December 23. The film is rated PG-13.
