A Plane Constructed by a Man in His Own Garden for His Family

Mechanical engineer Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan was inspired to fly a plane after moving near an airfield in the UK over a decade ago. He initially learned to fly through birthday present experiences, but as his family grew, he decided to purchase his own plane. Though initially considering buying an older aircraft, he ultimately decided to build his own, specifically the Sling TSi from South African company Sling Aircraft. Despite COVID-19 restrictions causing some delays in construction, Aliseril completed the aircraft himself with assistance from his wife and eldest daughter, and after passing inspections, flew the plane for the first time in January 2022. Since then, he’s taken trips with his family around the UK and Northern Europe and has plans to continue exploring through flying. For Aliseril, the main benefit of having his own plane is the freedom and flexibility it provides.
