A One-Star Google Review Provides a Crucial Lead in a Tragic Hit-and-Run Case

Tiffany Fletcher remembers the horrifying moment before the accident—they were on their way to a saloon in Riverview, Florida, when a truck suddenly turned into their path. Despite attempts to avoid a collision, the truck struck their Yamaha motorcycle. Kirk Adams, 59, sadly passed away a few days later, while Fletcher, 38, suffered a head injury and a broken leg. The pickup driver fled the scene. The Tampa Bay Times reports that an unexpected clue emerged, leading to the arrest: a one-star Google review.

Surveillance footage from a nearby company revealed a white pickup truck making the illicit U-turn. The truck bore the name of a business, Arbor Pros, on its tailgate. The Washington Post explains that a search of the business on Google uncovered a recent review containing crucial information:

  • “Just doing this review because the owner or son of the owner had a big accident on 301 and Balm River involving a couple on a motorcycle. The thing is he [fled] the scene and all I got was his company name on his white truck. Please if anyone seen his truck with a hit on the passenger side that’s the bike that he hit and ran like a coward. putting this here in case he didn’t Turn himself in yet.”

Further investigation linked Arbor Pros Tree Service to Chad Stall, who had previously been given a ticket while driving a white 2010 Ford F-250 pickup registered to his mother. A sheriff’s sergeant visited Stall’s home and discovered him and a damaged Ford pickup. Detectives found inconsistencies in Stall’s explanation—that an employee had informed him about the car being hit at a work site, and that his mother had driven him on the day of the incident.

Although the Google review was posted anonymously, authorities were able to determine the author’s identity. Ismael Gonzalez told a detective on July 6 that he saw the crash and followed the pickup, flashing his lights and honking to get the driver’s attention. According to Gonzalez, the driver aggressively stated that he was aware of the accident and intended to go back to the scene. Feeling threatened, Gonzalez drove away. Stall, who had previously served time for manslaughter, was arrested the following day. He now faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injury, which could result in a maximum prison sentence of 45 years if he’s convicted.
