A Nostalgic Homage: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro Remembers the Beloved SGH-E700 Flip Phone

Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro, a limited edition variant that pays tribute to the iconic SGH-E700 (also known as the SGH-E715 in the US on T-Mobile), which was first released 20 years ago in 2003. It retains the original’s indigo blue and silver color scheme, as well as similar pixel graphics for the clock widget on the cover screen and an exclusive cityscape-style animation on the Flex Window. This version will be available for purchase in Korea and select European countries, but not in the US.

The SGH-E700 marked Samsung’s initial foray into mobile phones with an integrated antenna and achieved tremendous success, selling over 10 million units. The popularity of this device elevated Samsung’s position in the mobile phone industry at that time, laying the foundation for its current status as a smartphone giant. Such was the phone’s appeal that in 2007, Engadget observed Samsung effectively reintroduced it with updated radios, capitalizing on nostalgia, despite it being only four years old at the time.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 Retro will come bundled with three Flipsuit cards featuring logos representing different eras of Samsung’s history, a Flipsuit case, and a collector card engraved with a unique serial number, according to the company’s announcement. It will be available for purchase starting from November 1 in Korea, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Australia through Samsung’s official website.
