A Lawmaker from the ‘Tennessee Three’ Announces Candidacy for Senate

Democratic state Representative Gloria Johnson, a passionate advocate for gun safety, has officially announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate. She will be running against Republican incumbent Marsha Blackburn. Johnson launched her campaign near her former workplace, Central High School, where she was a special education teacher and a survivor of a tragic school shooting in 2008.

Expressing her frustration with the lack of progress on gun control, Johnson stated, “I’m tired of Tennessee families being let down by their representatives, time and time again.” She refers to the recent special session of the state legislature that concluded without any resolutions on gun control.

Johnson gained national attention in March when she joined gun safety protesters on the House floor after a mass shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville. Alongside two other Tennessee Democrats, she demanded action on stricter gun laws after the tragic incident. This led to controversy, as the two Black lawmakers, Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, were temporarily expelled from the House by the GOP caucus, but later reinstated after a special election. Johnson narrowly escaped expulsion, believing it to be due to her race. Pearson is now a co-chair for Johnson’s campaign, which places significant emphasis on gun reform and abortion rights.

In her campaign announcement video, Johnson shared her personal experiences and expressed her determination to fight for justice. She revealed that her father was an FBI special agent who investigated the Ku Klux Klan’s activities in the Deep South, and she maintained a strong belief in calling out dishonesty and injustice when she sees it.

Johnson’s political career has had its ups and downs. She was initially elected to the state House in 2012 but lost reelection in 2014. However, she made a comeback four years later to reclaim her seat. In 2020, she faced the challenge of redistricting but adapted by moving and ultimately winning in her new district.

In response to Johnson’s announcement, Marsha Blackburn’s campaign labeled her a “radical socialist” who entered the race under the influence of liberals in Washington. They portrayed Johnson as being aligned with Joe Biden, the Squad, and Chuck Schumer, criticizing her for pushing a “divisive, destructive agenda.” The term “woke” was used to denigrate Johnson, even though it originally referred to awareness of social injustices.

Johnson, on the other hand, highlighted Blackburn’s support for a federal abortion ban and her opposition to lowering prescription drug costs. She emphasized the need for accessible healthcare and the freedom to make decisions about one’s own body. Johnson aims to challenge the influence of extremists and billionaires in the political system, positioning herself as a leader with the courage to stand up for the people.

Overall, Gloria Johnson’s campaign for the U.S. Senate against Marsha Blackburn emphasizes her dedication to gun reform, abortion rights, and fighting for the needs of Tennessee families.
