A Journey Across America: Exploring My Adopted Homeland in Detail

Have you ever enjoyed your own company? This is a question that has fascinated humans for centuries. Although I had planned to embark on a cross-country road trip with my friend John, known for his razor-sharp intellect and eagle-eyed perception, he was unfortunately dealing with dental difficulties that left him unable to join. Thus, I found myself alone for ten days, navigating the roads in a sky-blue 2009 Toyota Camry borrowed from my son, who was taking a leave of absence from college.

Being alone definitely has its perks. I called all the shots, set the pace, and even took charge of bathroom breaks. Indulging in a delicious Filet-O-Fish or any other type of snack was entirely my prerogative. However, being alone in the current state of society is not always easy. It can feel suffocatingly isolating, making every tree and building feel like they are echoing your solitude. It’s been a gradual progression towards this increased sense of individualism and introspection, from the ancient Greeks’ revolutionary depiction of the human foot to Descartes’ famous statement of “I think, therefore I am” to the LSD culture of the sixties and beyond to the modern trend of manifesting one’s own reality.

During my road trip, I had some truly fascinating encounters, such as the woman who asked me about my beliefs on Jesus Christ during a flight to L.A. Despite our differing views, we managed to have a lovely conversation. As I drove through the streets of L.A., I was struck by the unique energy of the city, from the Krav Maga studios and hypnotism centers to the delis and the dive bars filled with staggering patrons.

As I made my way through the desert, I experienced a slew of mixed emotions. At times, I was filled with anxiety about my car breaking down, but eventually, I grew to appreciate its reliability and started to view it as a loyal companion. We cruised along the highways, gracefully weaving through the turbulent backdrafts of massive trucks.

One moment that will always stick out in my mind occurred at the Meteor Crater in Winslow, Arizona. This colossal hole created from a massive meteorite impact was a reminder of the incredible power of the universe, leaving me feeling a sense of peace and serenity I could not find elsewhere.

While on my journey, I also had some interactions that were less than ideal, such as my attempt to walk half a mile for food in Amarillo, only to be met with unforgiving terrain and trash-laden roads. Overall, being alone on this road trip was a unique experience that allowed me to truly embrace my own company and explore the wonders of this vast country.
