A Hockey Legend Suffered from CTE

Henri Richard, a late hockey Hall of Famer with 11 Stanley Cups to his name, has now been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The diagnosis was made after his death at the age of 84 in 2020, with his brain being donated for study. The Concussion Legacy Foundation Canada, as reported by the Canadian Press, revealed Richard’s condition. This degenerative brain condition can only be confirmed post-mortem. Richard’s son, Denis Richard, emphasizes that CTE affects athletes in various sports, not limited to football, in an interview with USA Today. Among the 17 NHL players studied, Richard became the 16th to be diagnosed with the condition.

CTE is associated with repeated head traumas and concussions. Tim Fleiszer, the executive director of CLF Canada and a former Canadian Football League player, points out that Richard’s brain was affected by CTE despite not being an enforcer. He highlights the need for the Canadian sports community to recognize the long-term impact of repetitive head impacts. Ken Dryden, Richard’s former teammate and a fellow Hall of Famer, states that Richard defies stereotypes and that hits to the head are not beneficial regardless of the sport. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, however, denies any link between CTE and hockey, though the players’ union and families of former players affected by CTE are pursuing legal action against the league.
