A Fatal Dispute Erupts Over Sauce

“It’s tragic that a life has been lost over a disagreement about sauce,” remarked DC Superior Court Judge Sherri Beatty-Arthur during a hearing for a 16-year-old girl accused of fatally stabbing another 16-year-old in a fight outside a McDonald’s in the early hours of Sunday. According to police, Naima Liggon of Waldorf, Maryland was transported to a hospital in a private vehicle after being stabbed around 2am. Despite all efforts to save her, Liggon succumbed to her injuries, as reported by NBC News. The suspect, also a resident of Waldorf, was apprehended later on Sunday.

Testifying at Monday’s hearing, Detective Brendan Jasper revealed that Liggon was stabbed after a dispute over a packet of sweet-and-sour sauce, according to The Washington Post. Jasper stated that the suspect initially refrained from fighting back as two other girls attacked her. However, she “lunged” at them when they tried to enter a vehicle, stabbing Liggon in the abdomen with a 7.5-inch pocketknife. The girl is now facing charges including second-degree murder while armed.

The suspect’s attorney argued self-defense, but prosecutor Priscilla Guerrero contended that the fight had ended when the stabbing occurred. Guerrero stated that the suspect was the only person who had brought a knife to what could have been a fistfight. According to The Washington Post, Liggon’s tragic death marks the 13th homicide of an individual under 18 in the city this year. Starting Friday, some areas will implement curfews for individuals aged 16 and under, as had been planned even before Liggon’s killing. Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf, where Liggon was a student, had grief counselors available on the first day of school.
