Passengers traveling on the London Underground will now notice a new addition to the Tube map. A purple-bordered white line now represents the Crossrail link that runs from east to west through the capital. Officially known as the Elizabeth Line, this ambitious transport project has been in the making for decades. Despite a delay of four years and a cost of £20 billion, it is finally ready for operation after 13 years of construction.

While the link is not yet fully completed, with connections to Reading still forthcoming, it is an engineering marvel boasting nine new stations. This major innovation marks the first significant development since the opening of the Jubilee Line extension in 1999.

The Elizabeth Line is equipped with cutting-edge technology, but there is one crucial condition: the new Class 345 trains will be manned, despite their capability for automatic operation. This line presented an opportunity for a fully automated network, which was resisted, particularly by transport unions. Consequently, the Elizabeth Line will employ around 140 drivers, representing a missed chance to fully embrace new technology.

While many passengers may find comfort in knowing there is a driver on board, even if it is unnecessary, the future viability of train and metro networks across the UK is now under scrutiny due to the transport unions’ threat of a complete railway shutdown next month. Among their demands is a 10% pay rise for staff, which is not surprising considering the double-digit inflation. However, the unions face a challenge as underground and mainline services continue to lose money, with passenger numbers still struggling to recover from the pandemic-induced decline.

Only a few years ago, the railways experienced booming usage, reaching levels not seen since the 1920s. However, the economic shutdown caused a sharp reversal in this trend. With many commuters no longer working in the office full-time, the financial impact has been significant. Transport for London is facing severe financial difficulties, leading to the potential closure of certain Tube links for extended periods to address the funding crisis.

While unions are tasked with representing the interests of their members, the government must also consider those of the public. Embracing the opportunities presented by technological advancements could have been a stepping stone towards resolving these challenges.
