Boise State clinched its fifth Mountain West Conference championship in program history on Saturday, triumphing over UNLV 44-20 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. In doing so, Boise State’s Spencer Danielson made history as the first interim coach in FBS history to lead his team to a conference title.
Clay Helton led USC to the 2015 Pac-12 Championship Game as an interim coach, but the Trojans eventually lost to Stanford. USC later removed the interim tag and made Helton its full-time coach. It remains to be seen if Boise State will follow suit with Danielson after his impressive achievement.
The Broncos showed their dominance on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Boise State amassed 301 yards rushing compared to UNLV’s 83, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Star running back Ashton Jeanty led all rushers with 157 yards and one touchdown, surpassing the 100-yard mark for the sixth time this season. Defensively, Boise State recorded seven tackles for loss and did not allow a run longer than 14 yards.
Danielson was appointed interim coach on Nov. 12 following Andy Avalos’ dismissal after a 5-5 start to the season. In his first game as head coach, Danielson’s Broncos secured their most significant win of the season in terms of scoring margin by defeating Utah State 45-10.
Subsequently, Boise State beat an 8-3 Air Force team, which had once been ranked in the AP Top 25, by eight points in the regular-season finale to earn a spot in the Mountain West title game. Prior to his current position, Danielson served as Boise State’s defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for three years. This marks his seventh season with the program, having held various roles on the defensive side of the ball since joining the staff as a graduate assistant in 2017.
