Residents returning home after deadly Philippine earthquake

Residents in the southern Philippines have begun returning home after a strong earthquake, measuring 7.4, took at least one life and led to a series of aftershocks. Reports indicate that the disaster caused only minor damage to some infrastructure.

The quake, which occurred on Saturday night, prompted agencies to issue a tsunami alert for the Philippines and Japan. However, these warnings have since been lifted, and residents are being urged to follow the guidance of local authorities.

In the coastal town of Carrascal in Surigao del Sur, all evacuees had returned to their homes, while the Philippine Coast Guard remains on alert amid fears of potential dispatch.

The strongest aftershock recorded so far has been a magnitude of 6.5, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. Despite the disaster, residents are describing the events with palpable perseverance, such as Julita Bicap, a front desk staffer at GLC Suites hotel.

With the Philippines lying on the “Ring of Fire”, a belt of volcanoes around the Pacific prone to seismic activity, the country is all too familiar with earthquakes. Monitoring stations recorded waves reaching only 0.64 meters, much less than the 3-meter wave initially feared.

While the situation affected the Philippines and as far as Japan, the focus now is on recovery and ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected. Our hearts stand with those impacted by this tragic event.
