In a recent announcement, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for swift and significant changes in the country’s military medical system, removing the commander of the medical forces in the process. This decision was made during a meeting with Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, coinciding with ongoing debates about the 20-month-old war against Russia and the progress of the counteroffensive in the east and south.
Speaking in his nightly video address, Zelenskiy emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “There is little time left to wait for results. Quick action is needed for forthcoming changes.” He further revealed that Major-General Tetiana Ostashchenko had been replaced as commander of the Armed Forces Medical Forces, emphasizing the need for a new level of medical support for soldiers.
Umerov also expressed support for the changes, highlighting digitalization, tactical medicine, and rotation of servicemen as his top priorities. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military reports indicate advances in recapturing occupied areas in the east and south, with General Valery Zaluzhniy emphasizing the need for more sophisticated technology to counter the Russian military.
Despite acknowledging that progress will take time, Zelenskiy denied the war is headed into a stalemate, calling on Western partners, particularly the United States, to maintain levels of military support. Major-General Anatoliy Kazmirchuk, head of a military clinic in Kyiv, has been appointed to replace Ostashchenko following consultations with paramedics and other officials.
