Case of active tuberculosis is confirmed at a drop-in child care center in Omaha, Nebraska’s Westview YMCA. The Douglas County Health Department has identified over 500 children and staff members who may have been exposed. The investigation has come together over 48 hours with a mission to prevent any additional cases of tuberculosis and to catch them quickly and get them treated. Possible exposures may have occurred from late May to Oct. 30, with the patient being most infectious between mid-August through late October. There is no concern about continued exposures at the facility. Health officials have stressed that tuberculosis is treatable. To help address concerns, Children’s Nebraska will hold clinics to test and evaluate just over 200 children ages 4 and younger believed to have been exposed and more than 350 other children and staff members who were identified as having exposure. Health officials have worked with experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who have called it the largest tuberculosis investigation in the Midwest.
