Just One Alcoholic Drink Makes People More Likely to Harm Others or Animals, Study Suggests

According to a recent study, consuming just one shot of whiskey or any alcoholic drink with a similar alcohol content can significantly increase the likelihood of engaging in bad behavior, including harming others or animals. The study aimed to understand the decision-making process of drunk individuals in relation to ethical considerations and their intentions behind their actions.

The research, conducted by Mariola Paruzel-Czachura from the University of Silesia in Katowice, revealed that while intoxicated, individuals may exhibit immoral or inappropriate behavior compared to their sober selves. Previous studies have observed the consequences of alcohol consumption on behavior, but this study sought to examine this tendency in a laboratory setting. The participants were divided into three groups: an alcohol group, a placebo group (made to believe they were drunk), and a control group.

Each participant was presented with various scenarios, such as causing harm to a stranger’s child or verbally attacking their own parents. The individuals were asked to rank these scenarios based on their willingness to perform the action for different amounts of money, with the option to decline. The study found that alcohol affected people’s care and purity foundations, making them more likely to engage in harmful and impure behaviors. However, it did not alter their perception of fairness, loyalty, or authority.

“This research suggests that consuming just one alcoholic drink might influence individuals’ perceptions of right and wrong. While their moral values may remain the same, their willingness to engage in immoral or harmful actions increases under the influence of alcohol,” explained Paruzel-Czachura. The study also pointed out the possible cognitive and emotional changes that occur after drinking.

The implications of alcohol on mental and physical well-being are becoming increasingly important, particularly considering the rising alcohol consumption rates in the US. Excessive alcohol use has been linked to numerous deaths each year, with a significant impact on public health. While some studies acknowledge the potential health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, it is crucial to recognize the risks associated with any amount of alcohol consumption.

In light of these concerns, many individuals, especially millennials and Gen Zers, are embracing sobriety as a lifestyle choice to prioritize their health and well-being.
