The local Palestinian community organized an emergency protest and sit-in at the Alberta legislature Wednesday evening.
Within just 48 hours, the local Palestinian community came together to plan and denounce the recent attacks in Gaza, including an explosion at a hospital.
Demonstrators passionately chanted, “Free Palestine,” as they voiced their concerns.
Edmontonians who are part of the Canadian Palestine Cultural Association have experienced the devastating loss of dozens of family members in the conflict in the Middle East. The association is leading the call to end the blockade on humanitarian aid in the Gaza region and put an end to the destruction of residential buildings.
Mousa Qasqas, vice-president of the Canada Palestine Cultural Association, expressed the profound impact on the local community, saying, “There’s a Facebook group of 11,000 Muslim mothers and they said: ‘I don’t know if I want to send my kids to school because of the atmosphere and because of these attacks.’
“I have personally received some extremely disturbing voice messages. I even had an incident where I was cut off in traffic and I filmed it,” he shared.
“These attacks have escalated significantly, and our community is living in fear of what’s happening.”
This recent protest adds to the series of demonstrations that have been taking place in Edmonton.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, there were approximately 14 demonstrations over the weekend.
In the past two weeks, there have been demonstrations around the world by both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups, sparked by an attack from Hamas militants. These attacks consisted of rocket fire and a rampage across the border from Gaza, resulting in the death of over 1,400 Israelis, including 200 hostages, many of whom were children, according to the Israeli government.
In response, Israel has launched airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, implementing a total siege on the territory by cutting off essential supplies and power. The Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, reported over 2,800 Palestinian deaths, with an additional 500 deaths in a hospital explosion
