A 46-year-old man from Los Angeles has been charged with a felony count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence following the death of a 60-year-old woman from Long Beach. The incident occurred when the man, named Khalid Yagobbi, allegedly drove into a group of pedestrians on Saturday. Yagobbi is scheduled to be arraigned in a Long Beach courtroom, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
According to the police, Yagobbi was speeding in a white Chevy Bolt on the wrong side of Shoreline Drive when he ran a red light and collided with the pedestrians and multiple vehicles. The crash took place at around 6:34 p.m. at the intersection of Shoreline Drive and Aquarium Way.
The victim, identified as Romelia Cuarenta Aguilar, was pronounced dead at the scene. Eyewitnesses reported that Yagobbi hit Aguilar while she was walking with a child in a stroller across the crosswalk, and then crashed into several vehicles in the opposite lane.
Although several other pedestrians were injured and hospitalized, they are currently in stable condition.
The Long Beach Police Department stated on Sunday that there is no indication suggesting this incident was an act of terror or related to the ongoing violence in Israel. Nevertheless, the investigation is still ongoing.
Yagobbi, who remained at the scene, was taken to a hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Long Beach Jail. Initially, he was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Following the crash, Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish expressed his condolences to Romelia Aguilar’s family and acknowledged the community’s heightened concern and anxiety due to the violence abroad. He also commended the response by the officers, detectives, and FBI partners involved in the investigation. He emphasized that there is no evidence linking this incident to the Middle East conflict but assured that the authorities would continue investigating all aspects of the crime.
While the motive remains under investigation, the Long Beach police stated on Monday that there is currently no evidence connecting the incident to terrorism or the ongoing violence in the Middle East.
