In a bizarre turn of events, a Citibank analyst who was investigating financial fraud has ended up losing his job due to his own small-scale financial fraud. Szabolcs Fekete, based in London, went to Amsterdam for a work trip and used his company’s funds to treat his partner to lunch, as reported by the BBC. He submitted an expense report for two sandwiches, two coffees, and one additional drink. When his manager questioned whether he had consumed all the items himself, Fekete replied initially expressing annoyance: “All my expenses are within the €100 [$105] daily allowance,” he wrote. However, it was later revealed that Fekete had lied about it.
According to the Financial Times, the manager escalated the matter and Fekete eventually confessed to his deception. Citibank terminated his employment, stating that it was a matter of principle rather than the monetary value involved. Fekete, however, sued the bank for unjust termination, claiming that he was under the influence of medication when he initially responded.
