Natalya Komarova, the governor of the Khanty-Mansiysk region and a member of President Vladimir Putin’s governing United Russia party, made these remarks during a meeting with residents in the Siberian city of Nizhnevartovsk. Calls have been made for authorities to investigate her comments, but Komarova has not faced any charges or detention.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment when the governor was confronted by the wife of a Russian soldier, who expressed concerns about the lack of equipment for those mobilized for war. Komarova admitted that Russia was not prepared for the invasion of Ukraine and stated that the country didn’t need this war. She explained that they were focused on building a different world, leading to inconsistencies and unresolved issues regarding the conflict.
The governor’s comments quickly gained attention online, causing pro-war activists to report her to authorities for “discrediting Russia’s armed forces.” News outlet Sibir.Realii revealed a letter from Yuri Ryabstev, the director of a Siberian nonprofit, urging Russia’s minister of internal affairs to further investigate Komarova’s remarks. Since the Russian parliament outlawed the spread of “false information” about the invasion, critics have faced fines and prison terms for referring to it as a war. The parliament prefers the term “special military operation.”
