Fashion-forward Lab Coats: Elevating Style in the Lab

In the 1950s, society held the belief that women like Elizabeth Zott, the character played by Brie Larson, belonged in the home rather than in a science laboratory.
The TV series “Lessons in Chemistry” on Apple TV+ tells the story of Elizabeth, who aspires to be a chemist but faces opposition from the men at the Hastings Research Institute who think she should smile more and avoid pursuing her dreams.
Mirren Gordon-Crozier, the costume designer, aimed to showcase Elizabeth’s growth and transformation from a lab technician to the host of a cooking show called “Supper at Six.” She chose green as Elizabeth’s signature color to represent her passion, determination, and nonconformity.

Elizabeth’s introduction in the first episode occurs in a flash-forward at the TV studio. She wears her signature green as she enters, accentuated by a V-shaped neck, buttons down the back, and cigarette pants. The look is completed by a lab coat with royal green silk piping, symbolizing her progress and determination.

During Elizabeth’s time at the Hastings lab, Gordon-Crozier used colors such as teal and salmon pink to create a muted and earthy palette. The colors were chosen to exude brightness when illuminated by light. Pink was avoided since it did not align with Elizabeth’s character.
Elizabeth is required to participate in a work beauty pageant at the lab, where the secretaries strive to impress. Gordon-Crozier explains that they dress to attract husbands and view work as merely a temporary solution until marriage. The beauty contest has an autumnal theme, and while the others match outfits, Elizabeth dislikes the unprofessional nature of the event and dresses simply from her own closet, prioritizing comfort and functionality over sexiness.
When Elizabeth unexpectedly falls in love with Calvin (played by Lewis Pullman), Gordon-Crozier adjusts her wardrobe to reflect her softer side. She starts wearing beige and cream colors to indicate her renewed focus on her appearance.
Throughout the show, Gordon-Crozier has fun with Larson’s lab coats. Elizabeth chooses to cook in her lab coat because she finds aprons impractical and instead prefers
