Shoplifting Epidemic: Unveiling Stories and Beyond

Stop shoplifting

Shoplifting in America has reached a disgraceful level (“Crooks made to reflect,” Oct. 10). This is not a harmless crime that can go unpunished. Retail stores are taking measures to protect their merchandise from theft, including locking it up. As a result, stores are closing down, which has a negative impact on the economy and deprives consumers of essential goods, contributing to inflation.

To tackle the shoplifting epidemic, strict punishment should be implemented, along with increasing the number of judges, courtrooms, and court personnel to expedite case resolution and prevent innocent people from remaining in jail. Additionally, there needs to be vigilant monitoring of individuals or merchants who purchase stolen goods from shoplifters.

Judge’s disgrace

I wholeheartedly agree with Naomi Schaefer Riley’s description of Judge Erik Pitchal (“Condemned to Death,” PostOpinion, Oct. 7).

Who is overseeing our Family Court judges? It is disheartening to read about children suffering violence, abuse, and even death at the hands of those who are supposed to protect them.

The individuals in charge of these situations must be held accountable for their actions or inaction. While preserving the family is a noble goal, it is essential for those in positions of authority to address the harsh realities before them and make decisions based on the evidence presented. Unfortunately, there are individuals like Judge Pitchal who lack common sense or avoid facing reality, whether due to their privileged background or personal traits.

What truly matters is that Judge Pitchal holds the lives of children in his hands. He should be held accountable and removed from his position.

Protect the park

It is evident that the event that caused damage to Central Park’s prized Great Lawn should have been canceled (“Good ‘Citizens’ Don’t Trash Parks,” Nicole Gelinas, PostOpinion, Oct. 5).

However, Central Park does not have the authority to approve or cancel large-scale events. These responsibilities rest with the Mayor’s Office and the Parks Department.

We need to prioritize the well-being of our green spaces and prioritize them over moneyed corporations that have little long-term interest in our park besides what it can offer them. Now, we are faced with extensive re-sodding, depriving New Yorkers of utilizing the space.

Let’s hope the Mayor’s Office and the Parks Department have learned a valuable lesson. Next time, events like Global Citizen should be relocated to venues such as Yankee Stadium.

No street for Sully

I am deeply disappointed after reading that a Manhattan Community Board vetoed the proposal to name part of West 50th Street after an American hero, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (“Sorry, Sully, no street of dreams,” Oct. 6).

We all remember that day and the overwhelming joy and gratitude felt in New York City and across the country. Capt. Sullenberger and his co-pilot made a life-saving decision to land in the Hudson River with incredible skill and military precision, saving the lives of over 100 people.

Thank you, Capt. Sullenberger, for your bravery and heroism. All New Yorkers are forever indebted to you.
