The window for Palestinians to evacuate from northern Gaza is rapidly closing as Israel prepares for a military operation. Time is running out for civilians to use approved corridors to move to the south.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated that Palestinians have until 4 p.m. local time to evacuate through two main roads in northern Gaza.
As of now, the deadline has passed, indicating that the window has technically closed. However, many Palestinians are still fleeing, and it is unlikely Israel has closed off all paths.
Efforts are underway to assist Palestinian Americans in crossing through the Rafah crossing, which connects with northeast Egypt. However, the crossing is currently closed on the Palestinian side due to Israeli strikes.
Last Friday, Israel ordered over one million Palestinians in Gaza to evacuate. The warning was delivered through fliers and leaflets.
The United Nations criticized the evacuation order, expressing concern over the potential disaster it could pose for Palestinians who are under a complete blockade by land, air, and sea, and have been besieged for days.
The U.N.’s humanitarian office reported that tens of thousands of Palestinians have already fled Gaza, with at least 400,000 displaced due to Israel’s ongoing war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Israel has vowed to take fierce retribution against Hamas for their raid on the southern border, which resulted in the deaths of over a thousand people in a surprise attack last week.
