Officials in Nevada issue warning about brain-eating amoeba found at Lake Mead
Lake Mead National Recreation Area confirms presence of “brain-eating amoeba” in hot springs
A spokesperson for Lake Mead National Recreation Area states, “Naegleria fowleri has been found in hot springs. This amoeba enters through the nose and causes a potentially fatal infection, with symptoms such as severe headache, fever, and vomiting.”
Visitors are advised to avoid diving, splashing water, or submerging in hot spring waters.
In the United States, there have been four reported deaths this year from Naegleria fowleri infection, which occurs when the amoeba enters the nose during freshwater activities such as swimming.

According to the CDC, Nagleria fowleri can cause the deadly primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which destroys brain tissue.
Out of the 157 known infections in the United States between 1962 and 2022, only four individuals have survived, resulting in a death rate of over 97%.
