Airlines Temporarily Halt Flights to Tel Aviv Amidst Recent Hamas Attacks

Several airlines have halted flights to Israel amid the ongoing conflict between the country and Palestinian militant group Hamas, resulting in hundreds of casualties and thousands of injuries.

United Airlines confirmed that it operated two scheduled flights from Tel Aviv over the weekend but has temporarily suspended flights to Tel Aviv until the situation improves.

United Airlines issued a travel alert for Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) in Tel Aviv from October 7th to the 14th. Passengers who meet specific criteria can reschedule their trips without incurring fees or fare differences, as stated by the airline.

Air Canada announced the temporary suspension of flights to Israel starting Sunday. This affects flights scheduled for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday between Tel Aviv, Toronto, and Montreal. Passengers who choose to change their flights to another date between Sunday and October 21st can do so free of charge. Alternatively, those who cancel their flights entirely will receive a full refund, according to Air Canada’s announcement.

American Airlines also issued a travel alert on Sunday for passengers traveling to, through, and from Tel Aviv. Passengers with flights scheduled between October 7th and 21st can change their flights with waived fees under certain conditions.

Delta Airlines canceled flights to Tel Aviv for the current week and will continue to adjust their schedule as necessary. In their travel alert, Delta states that they will provide travel waivers for rebooked flights until or before October 21st.

If passengers are unable to rebook before October 21st, Delta allows them to cancel their reservation and use the credit towards a new ticket valid for one year from the original ticket date.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for Gaza, advising against travel to the region due to terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflict.

The State Department recommends that travelers exercise increased caution when visiting Israel and the West Bank, citing terrorism and civil unrest as the reasons.

In an update on Sunday, the State Department stated that the situation remains dynamic, cautioning about the possibility of mortar or rocket fire occurring without warning.

The recent flight cancellations follow surprise attacks by Hamas, the ruling political and militant group in Gaza, on Saturday.

Israel’s military has escalated its retaliatory strikes in Gaza in the past two days, leading to a death toll surpassing 1,100 on both sides, with thousands more injured.

As of Sunday night, Ben Gurion International Airport remains open, with FlightAware tracking arrivals and departures at the airport.

The State Department advises U.S. citizens in Gaza who can safely leave to monitor the status of the Rafah Crossing, the only crossing point between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.
