Typhoon Jenny Intensifies Significantly: Batanes Now Under Signal No.2

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Jenny, known internationally as Koinu, continues to strengthen as it moves towards Northern Luzon. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has raised tropical cyclone wind signal no. 2 for the province of Batanes.

In the latest typhoon bulletin from Pagasa, Jenny was located 410 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 165 km per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 205 kph. The typhoon is moving northwestward at a speed of 10 kph.

Signal No. 2 is raised in Batanes, indicating gale-force winds with a minor to moderate threat. Signal No. 1, indicating strong winds with minimal to minor threat to life and property, is raised in the following areas:

  • Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
  • The northern and eastern portions of Isabela
  • Apayao
  • The northern and central portions of locos Norte
  • The northeastern portion of Abra
  • The northern portion of Kalinga
  • Ilocos Norte

Pagasa has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan. Rainfall is expected to accumulate between 50 to 100 millimeters.

Typhoon Jenny is forecasted to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Thursday afternoon as it continues to move northwestward or west northwestward.

Southwest Monsoon

In addition to Typhoon Jenny, the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” will bring gusty conditions over several regions in the Philippines including Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, and most of Mimaropa and Western Visayas. Heavy rainfall of 50 to 100 millimeters is expected in Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, and Western Visayas until Tuesday night.
