Intense Clash: Skip Schumaker Engages With Mets Grounds Crew During Delay

In Queens, Skip Schumaker has reached his limit with the incessant rain.

The manager of the Miami Marlins expressed his frustration with the Citi Field grounds crew after the game against the New York Mets was suspended at 1 a.m. on Friday following a three-hour rain delay.

Miami, currently in pursuit of a wild card spot, was leading 2-1 with only four outs remaining when the delay started at 9:41 p.m.

The tarp covering the field was briefly removed at 12:20 a.m., prompting Schumaker to engage in a heated conversation with umpire crew chief Alfonso Márquez, a member of the Mets’ grounds crew, and New York senior vice president of ballpark operations Sue Lucchi.

Shortly after, the Mets left their dugout, and the field was once again covered with the tarp.

As Schumaker’s team has a game scheduled against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh on Friday, there is a possibility that they may have to return to Citi Field on Monday to complete the game after the regular season has concluded.

“Without going into specifics, this is clearly an unfortunate incident,” stated Kim Ng, the Miami GM, following the suspension of Thursday’s game, as reported by ESPN.

This marks the latest frustration in a rain-soaked week for the Marlins, who also experienced a game postponement against the Mets on Tuesday due to poor field conditions.

Mets manager Buck Showalter acknowledged the frustration shared by both teams in the midst of a tense playoff race.

“We’re trying to win a game,” Showalter said. “And we sympathize with what they’re trying to achieve as well.”

Showalter admitted to reporters that the constant delays caused confusion for him and his team as well.

“We had two or three potential start times,” Showalter explained. “We were ready to go and then it kept getting delayed. It would start and we would quickly cover the field, but the surface underneath was still wet.”
