US Officials Defy Spying Accusations, Forge Strong Ties with China through Multiple Visits

U.S. Officials Continue Trips to China Despite Reports of Chinese Spying

High-level U.S. officials have made multiple trips to China over the summer despite continued reports of Chinese spying in the United States. According to Brent Sadler, a senior research fellow for naval warfare and advanced technology at the Heritage Foundation, the current policy of engagement and competition is sending confusing signals to Beijing. This confusion could be perceived as weakness and indecisiveness by the Chinese government.

Despite these tensions, the U.S. has been attempting to engage China with diplomacy. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, special envoy for climate John Kerry, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have all visited China this summer. However, these visits have taken place amidst increased reports of Chinese spying in the United States.

For example, earlier this year, a high-altitude balloon originating in China flew over North America and the contiguous U.S., prompting the U.S. to shoot it down off the coast of South Carolina. Additionally, the FBI has tracked more than 100 incidents of Chinese nationals attempting to breach U.S. military installations while posing as tourists.

Despite these incidents, Raimondo emphasizes the importance of maintaining open lines of communication with China to avoid misunderstandings and further escalation of tensions. President Joe Biden has also contributed to the confusion by making comments that upset Chinese leadership.

Looking ahead, Blinken is expected to host China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, while Biden is in talks to meet with President Xi in the U.S. this fall. However, according to Sadler, it’s crucial for the U.S. to strengthen its military and educate the public about the severity of the Chinese spying threat. Safeguarding Chinese American citizens and addressing illicit CCP activities, such as illegal overseas Chinese police stations, are also important steps to take.

Despite repeated requests for comment, the White House and State Department have not responded.
