A Hong Kong tourist had a terrifying experience when his bungee jump cord snapped, causing him to plunge into a lake in Thailand. A dramatic video captured the incident, which occurred during a leap from a 100-foot-high platform in the eastern Thai city of Pattaya, at an amusement park. The tourist, known only as Mike, accepted a challenge from his friends, as reported by CNN.
In the video, Mike can be seen jumping from a 10-story-high podium, only to have his bungee cord break just moments before hitting the water. He crashes into the lake with his back arched and arms outstretched.
Mike, who chose not to disclose his full name to avoid unwanted attention on social media, described the intense pain he experienced after the incident. According to Reuters, he said, “Initially, it was so painful that I felt dizzy. I sustained a significant blow to my armpit area due to my arms being stretched out.”
Struggling with the pain, Mike recalled feeling as if he had been severely beaten. Fortunately, staff at the Changthai Thappraya Safari and Adventure Park swiftly jumped into the water and rescued him. They then arranged for his transport to a nearby hospital, as reported by Reuters.
Mike suffered several injuries from the fall, although none were deemed serious. These included bruising near his left armpit, left thigh, and calf, as well as a swollen eye. Medical professionals prescribed pain relief medication and subsequently discharged him, according to Reuters.
Mike revealed that his hospital bills and physical therapy cost him 50,000 Hong Kong Dollars ($6,370 USD), which were covered by his travel insurance policy. He has since requested compensation from the park, but Reuters reported that he was only offered a refund for the bungee jump, along with 10,000 baht ($293).
The founder of the park, Nithit Intim, stated that they will cover Mike’s medical expenses but not any additional costs. CNN reported that Mike had signed a liability waiver prior to participating in the bungee jump.
