Frustration over the lack of action on the devastating impact of fossil fuels on our planet brought a massive crowd of protesters to the streets of Manhattan on Sunday. The demonstration coincided with the UN meetings this week to discuss global warming, but the main target of the protesters’ message was President Biden. The protesters were unwavering and made it clear that they expected bold action. As reported by the New York Times, 17-year-old Emma Buretta shouted at a rally before the march, “Biden, you should be scared of us! If you want our vote and if you don’t want the blood of future generations on your hands, put an end to fossil fuels.”
The city’s Climate Week, which aligns with the UN sessions, includes a summit on global warming scheduled for Wednesday, according to the AP. While President Biden will address the UN General Assembly, he will not be attending the climate summit. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made it clear that only countries with new and credible proposals, such as plans to phase out the use of fossil fuels, are welcome to speak. NPR reports that this leaves the US out. Similar protests took place over the weekend in Germany, England, Senegal, South Korea, and India, as mentioned in the Times.
