Russia’s Bold Move: Ukraine’s 2 Warships Under Siege

Russia experienced a rare acknowledgment of a successful attack from Ukraine on Wednesday. Two warships were damaged and 24 people were injured in Sevastopol, the largest city on the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, the Sergo Ordzhonikidze shipyard, which serves as a repair base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, was attacked with 10 cruise missiles and three unmanned boats during the early hours of the morning. The unmanned drones were destroyed by the patrol ship Vasily Bykov, while the air defense systems took down seven cruise missiles. The explosions were first heard around 2am, and a fire at the port continued to burn into the early morning hours.

The attack on the port appears to be Kyiv’s most ambitious strike since the war began, as reported by CNN. Last October, Ukraine also targeted the Russian naval base in Sevastopol with drones, according to the New York Times. Ukraine has since expanded its ability to strike at long range, resulting in bolder and more sophisticated attacks. Mikhail Razvozhaev, Crimea’s Russian-backed governor, shared a photo displaying damage to the port side of a Ropucha-class large landing ship. Two Russian military bloggers confirmed damage to the large landing ship Minsk and Rostov-on-Don, a Kilo-class submarine capable of carrying Kalibr cruise missiles. Both were undergoing repairs in a dry dock at the time of the attack.

One blogger revealed that 10 Storm Shadow cruise missiles, Ukraine’s longest-range weapon, were launched from Su-24M aircraft over the Black Sea, with three successfully hitting their targets. CNN reported that the Minsk had caught fire, citing the other blogger. Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, commander of Ukraine’s air force, commended his pilots for their excellent combat work in the aftermath. He thanked them while the occupiers were still recovering from the night-time bombardment in Sevastopol and added, “To be continued…”. Another attack occurred on Wednesday when a Russian drone targeted Ukraine’s Danube River port of Izmail, causing a fire and sending six people to the hospital, according to Al Jazeera. Ukraine’s military reported shooting down 32 drones. (Read more Russia-Ukraine war stories.)
