National Hurricane Center Keeps Busy on Labor Day

Following a period of increased hurricane and tropical storm activity on both coasts, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has reported a significant amount of activity in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the NHC stated, “Labor Day is busy across the Atlantic with 2 weak or dissipated tropical cyclones, and 3 candidates for development. We are closely monitoring Invest #AL95 over the central Atlantic, which is expected to become a tropical depression or a tropical storm in a day or two, and strengthen further later this week.”

In their Tropical Weather Outlook, the NHC highlighted an area of low pressure that has formed from a tropical wave located approximately 700 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The NHC noted that the low-level circulation has become better defined, with increasing organization in the shower and thunderstorm activity. Environmental conditions are expected to favor further development, and this system is projected to become a tropical depression or a tropical storm within the next day or two.

The NHC also drew attention to a strong tropical wave over western Africa that is forecasted to move off the African coast in a couple of days. They stated that there is a possibility of a tropical depression forming over the far eastern tropical Atlantic towards the end of the week or the weekend.

This increase in activity in the Atlantic follows the recent impacts of hurricanes Hilary and Idalia, which affected different parts of the United States. Hilary even resulted in the first tropical storm watch in the history of California.
