Thousands of cancer patients in England will become the first in the world to benefit from a groundbreaking development: a seven-minute injection instead of a time-consuming hour-long transfusion.
According to the NHS, around 3,600 individuals with specific types of lung, bladder, breast, or liver cancer will experience the positive effects of this change.
Currently, the immunotherapy treatment atezolizumab (also known as Tencentriq) must be administered via intravenous transfusion in a hospital.
This process typically takes 30 minutes, but for some patients, it can extend to an hour due to difficulties in accessing veins.
Fortunately, the majority of patients undergoing this treatment will now receive it through a less invasive injection under the skin, reducing treatment times by approximately 75%.
The immunotherapy — named atezolizumab or Tencentriq — is currently only available by an intravenous transfusion delivered in hospital
This new method is expected to provide a more comfortable experience for patients and also free up staff time, enabling them to treat more patients per day and reduce waiting times.
