Since the mid-1980s, UK cancer death rates have decreased by approximately 25 percent, marking a “golden era” of improved diagnosis and treatment methods.

The implementation of screening programs and a significant decline in smoking rates have contributed to preventing an additional 1.2 million deaths, according to Cancer Research UK.

In 1985, cancer mortality rates peaked for men, while for women, it occurred in 1989. Since then, the rates have dropped by 24 percent.

This analysis comes shortly after the announcement that several cancer waiting time targets will be eliminated, amidst claims that they impede the diagnosis and treatment process.
