McConnell Experiences ‘Lightheadedness’ but Remains Functional despite Brief Stoppage

Mitch McConnell appears to freeze, struggle to speak in second incident this summer

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been declared “medically clear” to continue working, according to the attending physician for the U.S. Congress. This declaration comes after McConnell experienced a freeze during a press conference for the second time this summer.

Dr. Brian Monahan, McConnell’s physician, stated in a letter shared by McConnell’s office that occasional lightheadedness is common during concussion recovery or as a result of dehydration.

Dr. Monahan referred to a concussion McConnell suffered in March after a fall at a political fundraiser. After consulting with McConnell and his neurology team, Monahan has given the all-clear following an evaluation of the recent incident.

The incident occurred at the beginning of a press conference in Covington, Kentucky, when McConnell suddenly stopped speaking and remained unresponsive for about 30 seconds. He seemingly didn’t hear a reporter’s question about his thoughts on running for reelection.

This incident bears resemblance to a similar health scare McConnell experienced in July, where he temporarily froze and couldn’t speak at a news conference in Washington, D.C.

However, Dr. Monahan stated in Thursday’s letter that McConnell has been deemed medically fit to continue with his planned schedule.

Later, President Joe Biden confirmed this assessment during a phone call with McConnell, stating that McConnell sounded like his old self.

Biden visited FEMA headquarters and mentioned that the response McConnell had is not uncommon for someone recovering from a severe concussion, expressing confidence that McConnell will fully recover.

Biden had previously wished McConnell well after his fall in March and reached out to him following his verbal freeze in July.

A previous explanation from McConnell’s aide described the Covington incident as a momentary lightheadedness.

McConnell also participated in a discussion with Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., on Wednesday evening, as confirmed by his office.

According to Politico, some GOP senators are growing concerned about McConnell’s health, with discussions about potentially holding a special conference meeting on the matter.
