Arleen Sorkin, best known for her portrayal of Harley Quinn in “Batman: The Animated Series” and her role as Calliope Jones on “Days of Our Lives,” has passed away at the age of 67. The news was confirmed by an unnamed source to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Rest in Peace, Arleen Sorkin, the incredibly talented original voice of Harley Quinn, who helped to create the character so many of us love. Love to her family and friends,” wrote James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, on Instagram.
The cause of Sorkin’s death has not been disclosed, according to THR. Diane Pershing, who voiced Poison Ivy on the same animated series, stated on Facebook that Sorkin had been battling a long-term illness.
“I used to visit her when she was bedridden with her long-term illness and I would read to her, and I loved her very very much,” Pershing said. “I hadn’t seen her since I moved to Washington in January 2022, but I sent her messages and pictures of cosplayers at various Cons dressed as her, the original Harley Quinn.”
A spokesperson for Christopher Lloyd, Sorkin’s husband and co-creator of “Modern Family,” could not be reached for comment.
Sorkin had a recurring role as Calliope Jones on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” from 1984 to 2010. As a voice actor, she was renowned for bringing Joker’s partner-in-crime and on-and-off spouse, Harley Quinn, to life in “Batman: The Animated Series” starting in 1992. She reprised the role in various Batman video games.
“Devastated to learn we’ve lost the brilliant Arleen Sorkin. Not just a wonderful talent, but a truly wonderful person,” wrote former co-star Mark Hamill, who voiced the Joker in the series, on X.

Sorkin played a significant role in popularizing the character of Harley Quinn, who eventually received her own series. The character made her debut in the animated series in 1992 and wasn’t introduced in DC Comics until 1993. Since then, numerous actresses have portrayed Harley Quinn in animated series, video games, and live-action roles.
Margot Robbie notably portrayed Harley Quinn in the live-action films “Suicide Squad” (2016), “Birds of Prey” (2020), and “The Suicide Squad” (2021). Voice actor Tara Strong has voiced the character 33 times, becoming one of the most recognizable voices associated with Harley Quinn.
