Luis Rubiales, President of Spain’s Soccer Federation, Given 90-Day Suspension by FIFA After Post-World Cup Final Kiss

FIFA has suspended Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish soccer federation, from his duties for 90 days. This action comes after Rubiales’ conduct at the Women’s World Cup final, where he kissed a player without her consent. The disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales were opened on Thursday, and FIFA has not provided a timeline for its ruling.

Despite intense pressure from various parties, including the Spanish government, women players, soccer clubs, and officials, Rubiales refused to resign from his soccer presidency at an emergency meeting on Friday. The Spanish federation even threatened to take action against star player Jenni Hermoso for not accepting Rubiales’ version of the incident.

In addition to his suspension, FIFA has ordered Rubiales to refrain from contacting or attempting to contact Jenni Hermoso or her close environment. The organization is taking this measure to protect Hermoso’s fundamental rights and the integrity of the disciplinary case. Jorge Palacio, FIFA disciplinary judge and a renowned Colombian lawyer, issued this order.

While FIFA has intervened in the case twice, UEFA, the European soccer body, has not yet commented on its vice president Rubiales.
