Are You Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes? Disturbing Images Reveal Accumulation of Dirt, Grime, and Grease on Neglected Beauty Tools

Dermatologists have consistently emphasized the importance of washing makeup tools to eliminate harmful bacteria, grime, and grease. However, a recent survey conducted by Beauty Pie has discovered that one in six Brits neglect this crucial step. The survey, which involved over 1,000 participants, also revealed that 45% of respondents have never washed their foundation brushes and more than half have never cleaned their beauty blenders.

To highlight the consequences of neglecting proper cleaning, Beauty Pie captured close-up images of the tools, magnified by 10 times. These photos reveal the stains deeply embedded into sponges when they are not regularly cleaned. Shockingly, 53% of Brits admitted to never cleaning their beauty blender. Additionally, the macro images also showcase the uncleanliness of Gua Shas, with slimy surfaces, residue buildup, and dirty fibers likely caused by utilization with various products without subsequent cleaning.

Specifically, photographs of a foundation brush display encrusted bristles, accumulating years’ worth of makeup residue and oil. Failure to thoroughly sanitize a brush leads to product build-up, subsequently accumulating oil and dirt on both the brush and skin. This can trigger infections and acne. Dr. Joe Latimer, a microbiologist at the University of Salford, explains that our skin hosts a diverse range of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, usually maintaining a healthy balance. However, excessive bacteria can lead to skin problems such as acne, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and wound infections.

Moreover, neglecting proper cleaning is not limited to makeup applicators alone. Brits also admitted to failing to clean skincare tools like flannels, headbands, and face sculptors. For instance, 53% of respondents revealed they never clean their blusher brushes, revealing old makeup residue, dust particles, dirt, and oil hidden among the bristles. Additionally, 61% confessed to never washing their skincare headbands, which can be detrimental to maintaining hygiene. These tools may accumulate dirt within the fabric while hair collects in the elastic.

The most neglected beauty tools were face sculptors, particularly Gua Shas, with a staggering 73% of respondents admitting to never cleaning them. Furthermore, 40% of participants confessed to not washing their face flannels, and half reported not cleaning their face cleansing cloths. Disturbing images demonstrate how the structure of a flannel cloth traps dirt and fibers, which can be transferred to the skin with every wash.

Dr. Latimer emphasizes that each time we use beauty tools like makeup brushes, facecloths, or facial rollers, we transfer some of our bacteria onto the tools. Over time, bacteria, dead skin tissue, and residual skincare and makeup products accumulate on these tools, promoting bacterial growth. This recurrence of microbes on the skin can worsen if these tools are stored in a damp environment, as bacteria thrive in warmth and moisture.

The survey also revealed poor hygiene practices with other beauty tools, such as fake tanning mitts and skincare headbands. Among the participants, 73% admitted to never washing their tanning mitts, while 61% disclosed not cleaning their skincare headbands. Neglecting to clean these tools while regularly using beauty products can result in rashes and spots, as soft materials become a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria.

Dr. Latimer advises that to prevent bacteria from reaching unhealthy levels, it is crucial to remove their sources of sustenance, water, and heat. Regularly cleaning skincare and makeup tools and storing them in a dry environment is the best approach. By doing so, individuals can maintain a harmonious balance with their bacteria without risking the development of annoying spots or rashes.
