Candidate who lost Guatemalan presidential race files complaint alleging voter fraud

The party led by former first lady Sandra Torres, who recently suffered defeat in Guatemala’s presidential elections, lodged a complaint on Friday alleging fraudulent practices in the vote counting process. In a country weary of rampant corruption, Torres symbolized the political establishment, but has chosen to remain silent since her loss on Sunday.

Torres has refused to accept the results acknowledged by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, which declared Bernardo Arévalo of the Semilla Movement party as the victor of one of the most chaotic elections in recent history within the Central American nation.

Carlos López, a lawyer representing Torres’ National Unity of Hope party, submitted the complaint on behalf of the party, highlighting discrepancies in the vote counting procedure that he believes amount to fraud. While speaking to journalists, López claimed that there were duplicated vote tallies which cast doubt on the integrity of Guatemala’s vote counting system. He also mentioned that their party’s monitors were denied access to documents containing the tally of votes. However, he did not provide any initial evidence to support his allegations nor did he reveal if his judicial complaint included any evidence.

Arévalo’s landslide victory has sent shockwaves throughout the country’s political establishment. Previous attempts to disqualify his candidacy have sparked concerns globally about the state of democracy in Guatemala.
