Men Arrested for Alleged Arson Attack on England’s Iconic ‘Crooked House’ Pub

  • Two individuals, aged 33 and 66, have been apprehended in connection with a suspected arson attack on the renowned Crooked House pub in Himley, England.
  • The pub, originally constructed as a farmhouse in 1765, gained local prominence as it tilted due to extensive coal mining in its surroundings.
  • Nicknamed “Britain’s wonkiest,” the pub was demolished on August 7th, just two days after being set ablaze.

On Thursday, two men were arrested by Staffordshire Police on suspicion of deliberately setting fire to the historic Crooked House pub, famous for its slanted walls and uneven foundation.

The suspects are currently in custody and being interrogated regarding the destructive fire that engulfed the 18th century pub located in Himley, approximately 110 miles northwest of London.

Local residents, who were already grieving the recent sale of the tavern, were further devastated when the remnants of the severely burnt structure were bulldozed without awaiting the fire investigation results or obtaining permission from local authorities.

Enthusiasts of the pub, fondly known as “Britain’s wonkiest” due to its sinking foundation and slanted walls, had hoped for restoration and are now rallying for the pub to be reconstructed brick by brick.

A 66-year-old man from Dudley and a 33-year-old man from Milton Keynes have been detained on charges of arson with the intention to endanger lives, as stated by the police.

The pub, initially a farmhouse built in 1765, gradually sank on one side due to extensive coal mining in the area. It later transformed into a pub called The Siden House around 1830, a name derived from the local dialect meaning “crooked.”

In the 1940s, the pub was renamed Glynne Arms but faced condemnation due to safety concerns. However, new owners reinforced the structure, preserving its asymmetrical charm.

It was then christened The Crooked House and soon became a popular tourist attraction. With one side of the building about 4 feet lower than the other, it was renowned for its tilted grandfather clock and a peculiar bar where coins and marbles seemed to defy gravity and roll uphill.

A few days prior to the fire, an online petition was initiated to save the pub from redevelopment plans following its recent sale. The petition, titled “Save The Crooked House,” has now garnered over 22,000 signatures as of Thursday.

Due to a large mound of dirt blocking the rural road, firefighters were unable to reach the pub when the fire broke out.

Concerned individuals gathered on Monday to protest against the involvement of heavy machinery in the salvage operation.

The South Staffordshire Council has reached an agreement with the new owners to preserve the bricks and foundation elements on-site while closely monitoring the restoration process.
