Ukrainian Drones Target Moscow for Sixth Straight Day, Says Russia

According to Russian officials, Ukrainian forces allegedly dropped explosives on a Russian village near the border, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. Additionally, drones targeted Moscow for six consecutive days. These attacks are believed to be part of a larger Ukrainian campaign to extend the war into Russian territories.

Drone attacks deep within Russian territory have become increasingly frequent as Ukraine launches a counteroffensive. However, Western officials suggest that the deployment of troops has been misallocated, hindering Ukraine’s progress. In Moscow, drones targeted a building under construction in the Moscow City skyscraper complex, marking the third attack on the site in the past month.

The recent deadly assault on Lavy, a village in the Belgorod region, near the Ukrainian border, is the latest in a series of attacks that have claimed the lives of at least six individuals this summer, as reported by Russian officials. Vyacheslav Gladkov, the regional governor, alleges that Ukrainian forces have regularly fired upon villages in the region since Moscow’s invasion 18 months ago. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced the successful interception of two other drones in suburban districts of the Moscow region, while the drone that struck Moscow City lost control due to electronic jamming. Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on these incidents, as is their usual practice for attacks within Russian territory. The U.S. State Department representative stated that while they do not encourage such attacks, it is ultimately Ukraine’s decision on how to defend itself.

The intensified attacks near Moscow’s center of power are seen as an effort to bring the war in Ukraine to Russia and its citizens. However, Russian officials claim that the drone attacks in the Moscow region have not caused any injuries or fatalities.

Moscow City, mostly built during President Putin’s tenure, is considered a symbol of Russia’s economic modernization. It houses government ministries, finance firms, and technology companies. Due to the recent security concerns, air traffic in nearby airports was temporarily halted, with at least two flights being diverted.

In another incident, Russian forces allegedly attacked the southern part of Ukraine’s Odesa region with drones, causing damage to shipping facilities, including granaries. This attack is speculated to be a result of Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea grain deal brokered internationally in July. However, the authenticity of these claims remains unverified.
