Caribbean Island Nations Prepare for Flooding as Tropical Storm Franklin Approaches

Tropical Storm Franklin is approaching the south coast of the Dominican Republic, with the potential to bring heavy rains and flash flooding to the island. The storm, located about 120 miles southwest of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is moving north at 10 mph with sustained winds of 50 mph. It is expected to cross Hispaniola today and emerge over the southwestern Atlantic waters later. The areas under tropical storm warning include the northern and eastern coasts of the Dominican Republic, the southern coast of Haiti, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Heavy rainfall between 6 and 15 inches is possible, posing a threat of life-threatening flash flooding on Hispaniola. Franklin is the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and may strengthen into a hurricane by Sunday, east of the Bahamas.
