Man Rescued After Being Stranded on Bahamas Island and Utilizing Flares

  • A man found himself stranded on a remote island in the Bahamas for three days when his sailboat malfunctioned.
  • Fortunately, the US Coast Guard came to his rescue on Friday, thanks to the red flares he fired from his vessel.
  • If it weren’t for the flares, the man might not have been spotted by the Coast Guard.

A man who was stranded for three days on an isolated island in the Bahamas was rescued on Friday after attracting attention with red flares, according to a news release from the US Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard received a report from its aircrew about a disabled sailboat firing flares near Cay Sal, as stated in the news release.

Cay Sal is a small, uninhabited island that falls within Bahamian territory but is closer to Cuba and Florida than the major Bahamas islands.

According to the Florida Keys News, the US Coast Guard has an agreement with The Bahamas to regularly conduct aerial surveillance of Cay Sal in search of potential stranded individuals.

In this case, the Coast Guard dropped off supplies, including food, water, and a radio for communication, after locating the man.

The man, who had been stranded due to a malfunctioned vessel, informed the crew about his ordeal lasting three days, but no specific details about the malfunction were provided by the Coast Guard.

The man was later taken off the island and transferred to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, reportedly in good health.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Dev Craig, an official from the Coast Guard, expressed pride in saving the man’s life and emphasized the importance of having proper safety equipment on board a vessel.

Craig added, “Without seeing the flare, the outcome of this case may not have been successful.”

In the past, the US Coast Guard has encountered migrant vessels near Cay Sal, from individuals attempting to reach the US from Haiti and Cuba.
