Donald Trump announced that he will surrender himself to authorities in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday. This comes shortly after his Republican rivals for the presidential nomination are scheduled for a debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In a statement made on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that he plans to fly to Atlanta to be “arrested by a radical left district attorney”. The former president is facing multiple charges in Georgia, including violations of anti-racketeering laws and criminal conspiracy.

Expressing disbelief, Trump accused Fani Willis, the Democratic district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, of conducting a “witch hunt” against him in coordination with the US Department of Justice. He has continuously alleged that his legal troubles are a result of “election interference” by President Joe Biden and the Democratic party.

Trump’s surrender in Georgia comes as he battles mounting legal issues in four different criminal cases. However, these challenges have not hindered his political ambitions, as he continues to dominate the crowded field of Republicans competing for the party’s nomination in 2024.

A highly anticipated poll published in Iowa revealed Trump’s significant lead among likely Republican voters. The Des Moines Register/NBC News poll showed Trump with 42% support, significantly ahead of Florida governor Ron DeSantis who came in second with 19%.

Trump’s expected appearance in Atlanta on Thursday will take place a day after the first televised debate between the Republican presidential candidates, organized by the Republican National Committee in Milwaukee.

Despite strong poll numbers, Trump has stated that he does not plan on attending the debate.

Last week, Willis in Atlanta gave Trump and 18 co-defendants until August 25 to surrender to authorities. This followed the issuance of a comprehensive 98-page indictment concerning Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

When processed at a local prison, Trump and his co-defendants, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, are expected to have their mugshots taken. Arraignments will likely occur early next month, during which charges will be formally read and pleas will be entered.

Trump is expected to plead not guilty to the 13 charges brought against him by Georgia prosecutors. These charges include violations of anti-racketeering laws, criminal solicitation, criminal conspiracy, making false statements, and filing false documents.

Recent court filings indicate that Trump’s legal team has agreed to bail terms, including a $200,000 bond and a pledge not to intimidate witnesses, prior to his booking.
