Erin explained that after Jeffrey was struck in the head with a metal pole by protesters, his behavior changed, and he slipped into a state of depression. Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year veteran of the force, was set to return to duty on January 15 when he took his own life at the age of 35. Erin Smith continued her fight for justice following her husband’s death and became the first beneficiary of President Biden’s Public Safety Officer Support Act, which guarantees benefits for public safety officers and their survivors who die or become disabled as a direct result of on-duty injuries. David Weber, the attorney for the Smith family, is now seeking permission for Jeffrey to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
