DOJ Designates Capitol Police Suicide as a ‘Line of Duty’ Fatality

The Department of Justice has officially declared that the police officer who took his own life in the aftermath of the Capitol riots in January 2021 died while on duty. Metropolitan Police Department officer Jeffrey Smith tragically ended his own life following the mass protests and riots in support of former President Trump. The widow of Jeffrey Smith, Erin Smith, expressed her frustration at initially being denied the line-of-duty benefits that her husband deserved. However, she maintained her belief that Jeffrey’s death was a result of the injuries he sustained on January 6. Erin explained that after Jeffrey was struck in the head with a metal pole by protesters, his behavior changed, and he slipped into a state of depression. Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year veteran of the force, was set to return to duty on January 15 when he took his own life at the age of 35. Erin Smith continued her fight for justice following her husband’s death and became the first beneficiary of President Biden’s Public Safety Officer Support Act, which guarantees benefits for public safety officers and their survivors who die or become disabled as a direct result of on-duty injuries. David Weber, the attorney for the Smith family, is now seeking permission for Jeffrey to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
