Medical Experts Advise Against Tossing Children in the Air While Having a Ceiling Fan

Playing with your child by putting them on your shoulders or hoisting them above your head can be fun, but it’s important to be cautious if your ceiling fan is spinning.

Experts are warning that the risk of a child hitting a ceiling fan is often overlooked and could result in serious injury or even death.

A study published in the journal Pediatrics revealed that between 2013 and 2021, emergency rooms treated 20,500 ceiling fan-related injuries.

Data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission also showed that each year, 2,300 children receive treatment in emergency rooms for head injuries caused by ceiling fans.

According to the Pediatrics study, deep wounds were the most commonly treated ceiling fan-related injuries, accounting for three out of five cases. Skull fractures accounted for five to 18 percent of cases.

However, it is believed that many more cases have gone unreported.
