Oetzi, the famous glacier mummy discovered in the Italian Alps, has undergone a DNA analysis to reveal new information about his appearance and ancestry. According to a study published in the journal Cell Genomics, scientists used DNA extracted from Oetzi’s hip bone to determine that he was mostly descended from farmers in present-day Turkey. They also discovered that his head was balder and his skin darker than previously believed.
Oetzi, who lived over 5,000 years ago, was found frozen in ice after being killed by an arrow to the back. His body, along with his clothing and gear, including a copper ax, a longbow, and a bearskin hat, was perfectly preserved until its discovery in 1991 by hikers. It is currently displayed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy.
The new genetic analysis suggests that Oetzi’s appearance when he died at around age 45 closely resembles his current mummified state. Contrary to previous assumptions, he was darker-skinned and had less hair. It appears that his mummified remains have not significantly changed over time. Oetzi’s ancestry points to an isolated population in the Alps, separate from the gene mixture found in most Europeans today, which includes genes from Anatolian farmers, western hunter-gatherers, and eastern herders.
