In a controversial ruling, a court in Iran has handed a six-month prison sentence to renowned filmmaker Saeed Roustaee for showcasing his movie “Leila’s Brothers” at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Local media reported this development on Tuesday, August 15.
“Leila’s Brothers” is a captivating narrative that explores the struggles of a family facing economic hardship in Tehran. Despite its ban in Iran since its release last year, the film competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival, ultimately winning the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) award.
The reformist daily Etemad revealed that Roustaee and the film’s producer, Javad Noruzbegi, were both found guilty of “contributing to propaganda of the opposition against the Islamic system” and were handed the six-month prison sentence for screening the movie at the Cannes Film Festival.
